Work with me to create effective and meaningful learning experiences

Creating meaningful learning experiences for all your needs!

I work with clients through a relationship-driven collaborative approach to create practical learning experiences, combining educational technology and design. With over ten years of experience, I provide a suite of learning experience design services for clients in higher education, municipal, non-profit, and community organizations. I also work with individuals working to enhance their teaching and learning endeavours.

Beginning with an analysis of learning goals, learning, and the learners, I recommend efficient and practical experiences. Then, I work closely with clients from concept through continuous improvement using the most appropriate design models and methods.

Open licenses and OER are vast, and many clients find them daunting. I guide clients through all aspects of discovering, using, remixing, and creating OER. I clear the fog of using Creative Commons licenses and guide clients in choosing a license for their work.

Knowing where to invest resources in course revisions can be tricky. I work with clients to review their course content, interactions, engagement and accessibility. I provide overall findings and recommendations for improvement to make the course the best it can be.

As an author of a widely distributed ebook myself, I work with clients interested in creating digital books. Specializing in open textbook creation using Pressbooks, I bring clients’ ebooks to life by integrating interactive content with text, images, and video.

Is your team new to instructional design, technology-enhanced learning, or online learning? I work with clients to determine their needs and offer workshops, courses, communities of practice, and job aids. I focus on creating flexible and practical training for everyone.

Scenario-based learning offers a scalable, safe, and cost-effective way to practice processes and decision-making. I help clients improve knowledge transfer and performance by designing scenarios including timely, specific, and actionable feedback.

Don’t take my word for it – here’s what my clients say:

I recently worked with JR to develop a new section of a course with an interactive online delivery model, and it was a fantastic experience. JR brought enthusiasm for innovative pedagogies and high-quality student experience as well as expertise in online course design and a cheerfully collaborative approach. I’m thrilled with the end result—JR created instructor guides for online teaching methods perfectly suited to the course, accessible for a variety of instructors, and beautifully designed—but I was also energized throughout the process by our conversations about teaching and learning.

Associate Professor and Department Head of English, St. Thomas More College, University of Saskatchewan.

When we hired JR to help us complete a digital learning content project on a tight timeline he delivered beyond expectations, bringing just the mix of experience in higher education, technical know-how and detail-oriented project management we needed. His design work is exceptional, with attention to best practices for media development, industry standards and accessibility compliance. For example, in addition to troubleshooting our captioning strategy, he also prepared a beyond-expectations instructor’s manual to accompany the resource. I would not hesitate to recommend JR to others looking for a creative and knowledgeable digital learning content creator who will ensure your team meets its goals on schedule, on budget and on point.

JR is a rare gem that makes ideas happen. He can see the big picture at the same time as getting into the weeds. He helped me launch and lead the development of an online graduate program. He provided critical insights into the overall program vision and development support for many of the courses. He is hardworking, creative, and professional —and fun to work with—all the things you wish for in an Instructional Designer. I particularly appreciate his clean, sleek, and intuitive design aesthetic, which enhances student learning. Students and faculty have regularly complimented the quality of our course layouts and flow. We have had great success with this program—much of it can be attributed to the contributions of JR.

Faculty Lecturer, Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan

I had the fortune to work with JR as a subject matter expert on an open educational resource in professional communication. He was exceptionally talented, knowledgeable and easy to work with. His respectful curiosity and active listening skills made it easy to work collaboratively, and made it fun and easy to learn with and from him. The open textbook with activities he developed was adopted by several organizations and institutions. The exposure heightened my reputation, including getting tapped to act as an expert witness. JR is among the best at designing and developing to convert your expertise into e-books.
