Materials: each dice project consists of a 24” length of  ⅛” x 4” flat bar, plus consumables such as MIG wire. 

Description:

In this combined metal shop and welding workshop, participants will have an opportunity to learn safe operation of a variety of tools in order to complete a six sided die project. Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Safely operate the metal bandsaw, bench grinder, drill press, angle grinder, and MIG welder
  • Inspect, set up, and perform cuts using the metal bandsaw
  • Deburr and clean edges of their workpiece using the bench grinder
  • Set up, including setting speed and fastening the workpiece, and perform drilling operations using the drill press 
  • Selecting the appropriate abrasive and use the angle grinder
  • Perform proper start up and shut down procedures for the MIG welder
  • Perform 8 outside corner welds using the MIG welder

Participants should bring:

  • Close toed shoes (work shoes are preferred, and non-synthetic materials preferred), ensure that the laces are not frayed.
  • Wear clothes that are sturdy and flame resistant (e.g. denim, cotton) as synthetic fibers (e.g. polyester) pose a personal hazard in the welding shop environment. Jeans and long sleeve shirt would be appropriate. Ensure that your clothing does not have frayed edges (e.g. around the cuffs of your pants)
